People have asked how did the Councillors vote about the Cycleway in December. The Votes and how they Campaigned are here.
A lot of the Community was asking how Councillors voted about the removal of the cycleway in the meeting before Xmas.
There was a lot of debate about the options at the Council meeting on 18th December.
- Three options were voted on. All three options are attached from the minutes.
Who suggested each motion and how each Councillor voted for each option was listed in the minutes.
Option Three was carried. The short version of what this vote was about is:
NPDC and NZTA are to conduct a trial from Morley Street to Belt Road which replaces the concrete separators with an alternative most vehicles can cross without damage.
NPDC officers will monitor the impacts of the current and new design and report back in September 2026.
- A lack of actual data being recorded was mentioned multiple times in the meeting on the 18th December. We are running our Cycleway Safety Campaign so this IS NOT an issue when the next decision is voted on.

Our team kept a record of how Councillors campaigned before the election, so if they don’t vote in the way they suggested they would after the election, we will let you know.
- Compare the list below with the votes made on 18th December.
Cycleways were mentioned in the NPDC “Know your candidates” questions. This is where the Councillors stood with the general question about cycleways (not specifically Devon St West).
Campaigned for Cycleways:
EJ Barrett
Sam Bennett
Te Waka McLeod
Dinnie Moeahu
Campaigned Against Cycleways:
Max Brough
Gordon Brown
Graham Chard
Murray Chong
Christine Fabish
Damon Fox
Moira Irving-George
Kerry Vosseler
John Woodward
Campaigned for what already exists to remain:
Gina Blackburn
David Bublitz
In the Ratepayers Alliance Survey:
Gordon Brown and Damon Fox indicated they were against the cycleway.
To be fair with the voting, the lack of “factual” safety data which should have been captured by the Transport Choices Team, and presented to the Councillors, was a big factor in some of the Councillors not being comfortable to vote for full removal.
- This should not have been an issue. Safety Data should have been clearly recorded from the first day of installation of the cycleway.
- We don’t want any excuses the next time Councillors vote.
We are happy to keep a record of all incidents, near misses and injuries - but we need everyone affected by the cycleway to let us know what is going on - so we can make sure the Councillors have to vote the right way next time.
